Paper Scavenging

Mr. Carroll’s project challenge:

1. How could we systematically collect, organize, and distribute for re-use all the useable paper that gets thrown away or recycled?

Responses

  1. It would probably be better to make sure that all usable paper is not thrown out or recycled in the first place. It would be very hard to sort through the trash and recycling to find usable paper. It might be a good idea to provide some kind of incentive to students and teachers who have extra usable paper that they are not going to use to give the paper to the school for use in class. A lot of times at the end of the year, students will throw out binders or notebooks which often have a lot of unused paper in them.

  2. There is paper in both recycling bins and trash bins that a) has not been used at all, but printed by mistake, etc. or b) used either one side or less.
    An optimal approach would
    1) Decrease the demand for paper in all school practices
    2) Optimize REUSE of all and any kinds of paper
    3) Recycling of paper no longer capable of being used
    4) Club could work within or create another structured group that would make it habit to collect discarded paper (recycled or trashed) to be organized for re-use as notebook, scrap, and signage paper.
I think Ryan’s idea of incentivizing this type of re-use of paper is an excellent one

  3. I think that all students will be required to have a laptop next year, so i think that could help decrease the amount of paper use. Students could be encouraged to take notes on their computers, and to read handouts and assignments online without printing them out.
